Heads Up! Concussion Awareness

Athlete safety is important! Howell Soccer Club has a head injury protocol adopted from US Youth Soccer to keep parents, players, and coaches aware of head injuries. Take a look at the material below.

Howell Soccer Club's Head Injury Protocol

Step 1: Remove the player from the play to evaluate the player for signs and symptoms of a concussion.

Step 2: Determine if emergency treatment is needed?

Step 3: If a possible concussion occurred, but no emergency treatment is needed, focus on these areas every 5-10 min for the next 1 - 2 hours, without returning to any activities:

  1. Balance, movement.

  2. Speech

  3.  Memory, instructions, and responses.

  4. Attention on topics, details, confusion, ability to concentrate.

  5. State of consciousness

  6. Mood, behavior, and personality

  7. Headache or “pressure” in head

  8. Nausea or vomiting

  9. Sensitivity to light and noise

Howell Soccer Club recommends that players exhibiting these symptoms receive professional medical treatment. HSC Coaches/Board of Directors reserves the right to refuse the players right to play if there is a substantive concern for player safety.

Coach Concussion Education

Safety is important to us! All Coaches are required by state law to take a mandatory concussion safety training through the CDC Heads Up! program. This training can be taken online by clicking here.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.

This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.

Notification and Reporting

In the case of a suspected head injury, a Head-Injury Notification Form must be completed by the Coach/Staff/Board of Directors and the Parent/Legal Guardian on the day of the incident.
